Prayer for Forgiveness

A prayer of confession, seeking God's mercy and the grace to forgive others.

Prayer for Forgiveness

Introduction

Sin creates a barrier in our fellowship with God and breeds guilt and shame within our souls. Unforgiveness toward others acts as a poison, embittering our hearts and stifling our spiritual growth. This prayer for forgiveness is a vital tool for spiritual hygiene. It provides a structured way to honestly confess our shortcomings, claim the cleansing blood of Jesus, and ask for the supernatural ability to extend grace to those who have wronged us. Authentic repentance involves not just apologizing, but turning away from the destructive behavior. By praying this, you embrace the scandalous grace of the gospel: that you are fully known, deeply flawed, yet completely forgiven and loved by God.

The Prayer

Holy and Righteous Father, I come before You with a contrite heart, acknowledging my sin. I have fallen short of Your glory in my thoughts, my words, and my deeds. I confess the things I have done wrong, and the good things I have failed to do. Please forgive me. Wash me clean according to the abundant mercy You have shown through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. As I receive Your lavish grace, I also ask for the strength to forgive those who have sinned against me. Remove any bitterness, resentment, or desire for revenge from my heart. Help me to extend the same unmerited favor I have received, so that I may live in freedom and reflect Your character to the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
