Prayer for Depression

A prayer calling out to God from the depths of despair, seeking His light and sustaining presence.

Prayer for Depression

Introduction

Depression can feel like being trapped in a deep pit where the light of hope cannot reach. It numbs the spirit and exhausts the body, making even the simplest acts of faith feel overwhelmingly difficult. During these dark nights of the soul, prayer may feel forced or empty, but it is precisely in these moments that crying out to God is most crucial. This prayer is a lament—an honest expression of sorrow and a desperate plea for God’s sustaining grace. It does not offer simplistic solutions to complex mental health struggles, but rather tethers the suffering soul to the reality of a God who collects our tears and promises to never forsake us, even in the absolute dark.

The Prayer

Merciful Lord, I am engulfed in darkness, and my soul feels completely crushed. The weight of this depression is suffocating, and I struggle to find the energy to even speak these words to You. I feel disconnected, hopeless, and utterly exhausted. God, please do not hide Your face from me. Even though I cannot feel Your presence right now, I choose to believe that You are here in the depths with me. Be my anchor when I am swept away by despair. Send a glimmer of Your light into my mind to break through the shadows. Sustain me through this long night, and give me the courage to accept the help of others. Remind my broken heart that my feelings do not dictate the truth of Your steadfast love for me. In the name of Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, I pray. Amen.
