The Bible does not explicitly mention the modern concept of dating, but it provides profound wisdom for romantic relationships. God’s Word teaches that romantic pursuits should honor Him, prioritize spiritual compatibility, and intentionally lead toward marriage. By focusing on principles like purity, avoiding being unequally yoked, and demonstrating selfless love, Christians can navigate dating in a way that protects their hearts and glorifies God.
Dating as a Path to Marriage, Not Just Recreation
In modern culture, dating is often seen as a casual, recreational activity. However, from a biblical perspective, the ultimate goal of romantic intimacy is marriage. While the word “dating” is absent from Scripture, the process of finding a spouse is heavily addressed. God designed marriage to be a lifelong covenant, and the steps leading up to it should be treated with reverence.
“He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.” — Proverbs 18:22
When believers date, the intention should be discernment. Is this person someone I can serve God alongside for the rest of my life? Entering a relationship just for fun or to avoid loneliness can lead to heartbreak and compromise. Instead, Christian dating should be a purposeful journey.
The Principle of Being “Unequally Yoked”
One of the most crucial guidelines the Bible gives for romantic relationships is the command to only marry fellow believers. This is often referred to as being “unequally yoked.”
“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness— — 2 Corinthians 6:14
This isn’t about superiority; it’s about foundation. If two people do not share the same foundational beliefs about Jesus Christ, they will inevitably pull in different directions when it comes to raising children, managing finances, and making major life decisions. A strong Christian marriage requires both partners to be submitted to the Lordship of Christ.
“Can two walk together, unless they are agreed— — Amos 3:3
If you are dating, your partner’s relationship with God should be the most attractive thing about them. An unbeliever, no matter how kind or loving, cannot join you in the deepest and most important part of your life: your faith.
Guarding Your Heart and Sexual Purity
The Bible places a high premium on purity, both emotionally and physically. The modern dating scene often expects physical intimacy before marriage, but God’s design reserves sexual intimacy exclusively for the marriage covenant.
“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” — 1 Corinthians 6:18
Purity is not just about avoiding physical acts; it’s also about emotional boundaries. The Bible warns us to protect our deepest affections.
“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” — Proverbs 4:23
When dating, couples must set clear boundaries. It is wise to have accountability and avoid situations where temptation can easily overcome convictions. Honoring God with your body is an act of worship.
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4
Love According to 1 Corinthians 13
When evaluating a dating relationship, the world often looks at chemistry, wealth, or status. The Bible, however, gives us a clear definition of what real love looks like. It is not just a feeling, but a committed action.
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” — 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
If you want to know if someone is a good match, hold their character up to this passage. Are they patient when things go wrong? Are they kind to others? Do they insist on their own way? True Christian love is selfless.
The Beauty of Romance in the Song of Solomon
God is not anti-romance. He created it! The book of Song of Solomon is a beautiful, poetic celebration of romantic love and physical attraction within the bounds of marriage.
“My beloved is mine, and I am his.” — Song of Solomon 2:16
However, even in this celebration of love, there is a repeated warning not to awaken physical intimacy before the proper time (marriage).
“I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the does of the field, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.” — Song of Solomon 2:7
This highlights the biblical balance: romantic love is a beautiful gift from God, but it must be enjoyed in the right context and timing.
Seeking Godly Counsel
In Proverbs, the Bible emphasizes the importance of seeking advice from wise people. When dating, it is crucial not to isolate yourselves.
“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” — Proverbs 11:14
Allow mentors, pastors, and godly friends into your relationship. They can often see red flags or blind spots that you might miss due to infatuation. A relationship that honors God will thrive in the context of Christian community.
Focus on Becoming the Right Person
Often, we spend so much time looking for the right person that we forget to be the right person. The best preparation for a godly marriage is a deep, abiding relationship with Jesus Christ.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33
If you are single, use this time for undistracted devotion to the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:35). Grow in the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), serve in your local church, and develop your character.
Practical Christian Dating Guidelines
- Pray continually: Bring your desires, anxieties, and the relationship itself to God in prayer (Philippians 4:6).
- Prioritize spiritual growth: Date someone who challenges you to be more like Christ.
- Communicate openly: Honesty and transparency are the foundations of trust.
- Maintain boundaries: Decide on physical and emotional boundaries before you are in the heat of the moment.
- Look for character over charm: Charm is deceitful, but a person who fears the Lord is to be praised (Proverbs 31:30).
A Pastoral Note: Modern dating culture often treats people like disposable consumer goods. I constantly remind our young adults that the person sitting across from you at dinner is an eternal soul, deeply loved by God. Christian dating shouldn’t just look like secular dating with a prayer slapped on the front of it. It should be characterized by radical honesty, absolute respect for each other’s purity, and a shared pursuit of Christ. If a relationship is pulling you further from Jesus, it is not the relationship God has designed for your flourishing.
